Step inside my bottomless pit I want to forget Do-si-dos with stoner clone-bros It's all for the show When dogs would howl at nothing Well, I used to get annoyed But now I find there's value Howling straight into the void The universe is infinite But we just can't imagine it Because we are so trivially small "Schadenfreude, paranoia" Our reveille song Criticize the giant boot while We're being stepped on The constant threat of failure Leaves me feeling overwhelmed Feeling like a captive On a ship without a helm And if I give myself away I'll live to fight another day Or live to give myself away again
2.
It's a portable New Year's Eve The feeling that things might change It's a hat you paid too much for That makes you look a little strange It's an unbecoming chapeau I'm the boy that I wish that I didn't know Picking horsemeat from between my teeth But I still wish I had more to eat
3.
Pferdgeist 02:10
Lately I have found it hard To phrase my words In any kind of order With a meaning at all I just want to vanish I wish I were gaseous Gone, but not forgotten Just like Lauren Bacall I'd like to get out of this house I've been haunting But being around the living can be daunting
4.
Scabs 03:53
Surround yourself with cynics and pessimists Sinister specimens of inhuman pestilence Savor unpleasantness Attesting your testament To life's inherent meaninglessness There's blood on our hands Which we all just ignore Till it dries like a second skin of scabs That we don't dare to pick at again He never confronts anything that he's scared of He only picks fights that he knows he can win He only hits things that don't move But maybe someday he'll hit something Till it can't "Don't beat yourself up over this" We're all complicit with guilt and with apathy "Why can't you just let this go?" There's blood on my hands That I just can't ignore anymore

about

Max Miller and Alex Milstein formed Swartzwelder in a basement in Asheville, North Carolina in 2013. After graduating from UNC Asheville in 2014, the two friends impulsively moved to Philadelphia, where they began writing songs that would make up the band’s first release, I, Swartzwelder. Following a relocation to Greensboro, North Carolina, their long-time friend Jesse Akman joined on bass, transforming the group into a power trio.

From there, Swartzwelder began writing and performing new songs in earnest, culminating in 2016’s Hobby Horse, a disjointed debut album that speaks to the band’s eagerness to try out a variety of styles and emulate their disparate influences — Pile, Queen Moo, Toto and more. Now, with the Bottomless Pit EP, Swartzwelder focuses their sound with four tight tunes that exhibit their inclinations toward social anxiety and existential dread.

“There’s a stoic cowboy veneer to some of this music. The tone has more in common with the rider trying to keep his cool and not get thrown from a bucking and kicking animal than with the frantic gestures of the rodeo clowns.” — Yes! Weekly
